UCT DESIGN THINKING WEEK CHALLENGE
Muizenberg Promenade Enhancement
Our multidisciplinary team addressed the critical challenge of enhancing safety, accessibility, and overall user experience along the Muizenberg Promenade for tourists, locals, and people with disabilities.
We developed two complementary human-centered solutions. A modular, low-cost wheelchair attachment prototype that enables safe, stable navigation across sand and uneven prom. The second is a mobile-friendly webapp platform that empowers users to instantly report crimes or safety incidents, connect with a “buddy” system for safer group beach visits, access live updates on tides, water quality, and crowd levels, and conveniently reserve the wheelchair attachment for on-site use.
Our solutions addressed physical access barriers and also contributed to making Muizenberg a more inclusive, welcoming destination for all visitors — aligning with principles of universal design and social equity. .This challenge sharpened our ability to translate lived-experience insights into tangible, human-centered design outcomes while working under tight time constraints in a multidisciplinary team.
ENGINEERS WITHOUT BORDERS
Cape York Indigenous Sanitation Design Challenge
In collaboration with Traditional Owners in remote Cape York communities, we addressed critical sanitation access gaps through respectful co-design and ethnographic engagement.
The resulting prototype is a sustainable, waterless pit latrine system that safely contains human waste while enabling controlled aerobic composting of green/organic waste. Incorporating passive solar heating, natural ventilation, odour control, and culturally considered design elements, the system reduces disease risk, minimises environmental impact, and supports long-term community ownership.
Hands-on training empowered local residents to construct, maintain, and teach the solution independently — demonstrating how culturally safe engineering can deliver dignified, resilient infrastructure in off-grid Indigenous Australian settings.
ACHIEVEMENTS
Each completed project proved our ability to deliver inclusive, scalable, and impactful design outcomes under real constraints (time, resources, cultural sensitivity). We don’t just ideate, we research deeply, prototype quickly, integrate user voices, and produce purposeful solutions that improve safety, dignity, accessibility, and environmental sustainability while empowering communities to sustain the results themselves. These are not academic exercises; they are field-tested examples of design that creates measurable impact.
